Maddie's First Christmas With Us

December 2014

Thank you again to everyone who reads Through Maddie's Eyes and entered into last month's giveaway.  Thank you to LUSH Cosmetics for generously sending us the Christmas Penguin Bubble Bar free of charge and for the kind words they said about Maddie and the blog.

December Adventures

I believe this was Maddie's favorite month with us because she was able to help us wrap presents!  The sound of the wrapping paper and tissue paper proved more exciting than her toys.  As part of my Secret Santa present from work, Maddie received a brand new toy, a much needed distraction while her humans were wrapping.  The toy has jingle bells, crinkly ribbons and, her favorite, a large fuzzy ribbon.

With the cold weather, Maddie became even more of a snuggle bug, especially with the stuffed snowman from Build-a-Bear Workshop.  The two were often found cuddled on the couch or playing tug-a-war with the snowman's hat.

Merry Christmas!

It didn't take long for Maddie to discover all of the toys on the Christmas tree!  When we weren't looking, she loved to eat the branches and bat the ornaments.  On Christmas eve, she discovered that the lights were more interesting than anything else.

Finally on Christmas morning, Maddie was allowed to destroy the amazing Christmas paper we had kept her away from.  She spent about an hour clawing, rolling on, and eating the paper.  Now I know what to get her next year!

What have you enjoyed most about Through Maddie's Eyes this year?  Is there anything you would like to see in the upcoming posts?  Please let us know in the comments below!

New Friends for Maddie

Maddie has enjoyed another fun month in our home.  Each day she becomes more comfortable with her surroundings and she is always happy to welcome new guests.  This October she has met several new friends!

Sibling Update

Link has been slow to warm up to Maddie, often hissing and running whenever his sister attempts to get near.  However, this month we have noticed the two sleeping closer and wrestling in the living room.  Maddie adores Link, and I believe he is finally starting to realize she is not as scary as he once thought.

Maddie Meets a Baby

Maddie's first encounter with our friend's two-month-old baby was quite comical.  As you can see from the pictures, we were very careful about keeping Maddie's claws away from him but she was still able to smell and listen to him.  Before we adopted Maddie, she had given birth to a litter of 6, so I think some of her mothering instinct returned because she was extremely curious about the baby.

Maddie and Callie

Our next door neighbor, the one that saved Maddie from his backyard last month, has a sweet calico named Callie.  The other day, Callie climbed into our yard and after some apprehension, the two girls became friends.  Callie now regularly visits our yard, and I have a feeling she might be sweet on Link.

Happy Halloween!

Maddie's New Adventure

First Time Outside

My husband and I were dedicated to keeping our cats inside until the day Link darted outside.  Since then, we allow the cats to occasionally join us when we are spending time in our backyard.  In July, Maddie discovered that Link would disappear whenever the glass doors would open.  After a few weeks, she decided to follow her brother.

Once outside, Maddie would walk around the porch and listen to Link chase lizards.  Eventually, Maddie began to explore ways to leave the deck.  That was when my husband decided to teach her how to use the stairs.

Now, Maddie is comfortable with our backyard and has successfully climbed our six-foot fence once. After she had reached our neighbor yard, Maddie became very frightened and called out for help. My husband and I encouraged her to climb back ; however, she was confused by the new environment. Thankfully our neighbor was home and provided Maddie with a lift over the fence. After the ordeal, She received several snuggles and kisses from me and Seven.

Maddie's Summer Fun!

Maddie is having a wonderful summer and July has been packed full with new adventures.  Here are a few things that she has been up to:

New Manicure

Maddie loves to play with her brothers but, they hated to play with her.  One night Link was sitting on my husband's lap when Maddie ran over and swiped at Link.  My husband blocked her hit with his arm and noticed that Maddie uses her claws more when she is playing with her brothers than she does with us.  Luckily, we were introduced to Soft Claws, individual nail covers that allow Maddie to continue using her claws without hurting the boys or us.  At first my husband chose the clear covers in the size small.  Within a few hours, Maddie had removed the majority of the covers.  After applying several sets, we decided to order medium covers.  My husband surprised me with pink ones!  I just adore the way they look on her!  Since applying them last week, Maddie has only removed two and her brothers are more willing to play with her.

Best Friends Forever

Maddie has finally won Seven's heart.  It is adorable to watch the duo wrestling around the floor and cleaning one another's ears.  You can find them sleeping next to one-another, following each other around, and even sharing attention from their humans.  Seven has also been shy around new people and now, with Maddie's encouragement, he has become braver.  Additionally, Maddie has taught Seven new fight moves that he can use in his fights with Link.  Speaking of Link, he has started to warm up to Maddie as well.  Even though Maddie and Link are not best friends yet, Link will occasionally wrestle with his sister.

Meeting Her Uncles

Last weekend, my husband's younger brothers spent the night with us.  Maddie adored having the twin boys to play and cuddle with.  My heart melted when I woke up to find that Maddie had slept with them all night.

Maddie has discovered her new favorite hobby, yoga!  The minute I roll out my mat, she always jumps on and attempts to practice with me.

Her favorite pose was Downward-Facing Dog and, as you can see, she thinks that her claws were an important part of the pose.

See you next month!

Happy Birthday, Maddie!

Yesterday, July 9th, was Maddie's 2nd birthday!  She has been such a blessing this past month and I am so happy that God brought her into our lives.  Now that our house has become her home, she is even more affectionate than I first thought.  Maddie loves to follow my husband and I around the house, sit at our feet while we cook, and cuddle on my lap during movie night.  Additionally, she greets all of our visitors with open paws and hasn't met a human she dislikes.  Recently, Maddie has taken on a mothering role with her brothers, Link and Seven.  Throughout the month of June, my husband and I learned more about how to train and play with Maddie.  Here are some specific updates on what Maddie was up to during the month of June.

The Whole Gang

As you may remember from last week's post, her brothers, Link and Seven, were less than welcoming when Maddie moved in.  However, only one month later, Link and Seven are almost completely adjusted.  The boys still fight with their sister often, usually just batting and hissing on both sides.  As you can see, Seven and Maddie are starting to become friends.  The duo have been found playing with one-another and cuddling.  Maddie tries at least once a day to befriend Link; however, he has more of a stand-offish personality even with me.  Nonetheless, almost every time she is near one of her brothers, she tries to show them love or clean them.  I love that Maddie has such a large heart and she is never afraid to love.

Getting Around

My husband only helped Maddie down the stairs once and now she is a professional!

These crinkle toys can be found at Target for only $2 for a pack of 4 balls.

Can you spot Seven hiding under the stools?

Happy Independence Day!

Maddie enjoyed her first 4th of July celebration with us!  She received a lot of attention from our guests and even attempted to steal a hamburger with her brothers.  The neighbor's fireworks made her nervous, but she was very brave.

Thank you and see you next month!

Meet Maddie

This is Madison Kate, a sweet, tiny, and inquisitive female cat who loves everything and everyone.  Maddie was born without eyeballs and taught herself to complete daily tasks using her four other senses.  For example, after only a few hours in her new home, she had memorized the layout of our living room and located her food and litter box.  Maddie loves to be near people and animals.  During her first evening with us, Maddie snuggled with my husband and me on the couch; later, she slept on my back most of the night.

Our Boys

For the past year, our apartment has been home to two brothers that we found as kittens.  Link (grey with black stripes) and Seven (orange with white stripes) are playful, spoiled snuggle-bunnies who love to wrestle, catch lizards and sun-bathe.  Last year, my husband found a litter of five kittens living in bushes at a friend's apartment complex.  He fell in love immediately; after a week of careful consideration and prayer we decided to adopt two of them.

Link and Seven have become our children—I find myself worrying about their well-being more than my own.  Since they enjoy playing rough, I was very nervous about introducing them to Maddie.  However, when they first met their new sister, they were frightened of her and kept their distance.  She wants to be near her new brothers however, they are extremely skittish around Maddie.  The boys are curious about their sister and I know they will warm up to her soon.

Love at First Sight

My husband and I went to Petsmart on Saturday afternoon to love on the animals awaiting adoption.  Because it was the weekend of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days, all of the adoption fees were covered by Maddie's Fund.  The store was full of excited humans and hopeful pets; my husband and I met several adorable animals.  On Sunday, June 1st, we set out to meet my father for lunch and decided to stop by Petsmart first to play with the animals who  were still awaiting new parents.
When I first spotted the small black cat named Panini, I was drawn to her.  She responded positively to my touch—my heart burst when I found out she was blind; but I knew that it was crazy to disrupt our secure home environment by bringing home a third pet.
I played with her off and on for about 20 minutes before leaving for lunch.  She stayed on our minds and became the topic of conversation multiple times.  By the end of lunch, we decided that if Panini was at Petsmart when we returned, we would adopt her.  I prayed silently several times during that hour for God to show me what to do.   Upon returning to Petsmart, I was nervous she would be gone. I ran to her cage, and my heart fluttered as I saw she was still there.  Right then I heard God's voice telling me that it was going to be okay.

Coming Home
After about an hour of filling out paper work and talking to the adoption volunteers, Panini was a member of our family.  Jeremy and my dad went to Target to pick-up a few things while I drove home to retrieve a cat carrier.  In the car alone, I wrestled with my fears.  Did I make the right decision?  What would Link and Seven think of her?  Three cats is one too many, right?  When I returned to Petsmart, the sky turned dark and rain poured down.  Emotions swirled inside me as I walked into the store.  When I came to Panini's crate, a young boy was attempting to play with her through the bars.  My first reaction was tell the boy to be super gentle because she was my baby; that’s when I knew there was no going back.  A volunteer helped me secure Panini into her cat carrier and I tried to protect her from the rain on the way to my car.  God melted my heart and my fears began to float away.

Her New Name

It was just the two of us so I placed her carrier in the front seat. To calm her fears, I talked to Panini about the route I was taking and the cars we passed.  As I told her about her adoption process, she would be meow loudly each time I mentioned the name Maddie.  After careful consideration, I decided to rename her Madison Kate, Maddie for short.  I chose Madison Kate after the prestigious Madison Avenue in New York City and one of my favorite brands, Kate Spade New York.
